Choosing who builds your app is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a founder. A good agency becomes a product partner; a poor one burns your budget and your launch window. Use these questions on every call before you sign.

1. Can I see apps you've shipped that are live today?

Ask for App Store and Google Play links, not just screenshots. Download them and try them yourself.

2. Who will actually work on my project?

Find out whether the people on the sales call are the people doing the work, and whether any of it is subcontracted.

3. Do I own the code, designs and accounts?

You should own 100% of the source code, design files and store accounts. Get it in writing, and make sure the app is published under your developer accounts.

4. How do you price — fixed scope or hourly?

Fixed scope with milestone payments gives you cost certainty. Hourly can work for ongoing iteration, but make sure there's a cap and weekly reporting.

5. How often will I see working software?

Weekly demos of real, working builds are the best protection against surprises at the end.

6. How do you handle scope changes?

Changes will happen. A good partner explains the trade-off — what moves, what it costs — before doing the work.

7. What does your testing look like?

Ask about device testing, crash reporting and how bugs found after launch are handled.

8. Will you sign an NDA?

Any serious agency will sign one before you share the details of your idea.

9. What happens after launch?

Clarify whether you get documentation and a hand-off, ongoing maintenance, or growth support — and what each costs.

10. Can you help beyond the build?

The best partners care whether the app makes money. Ask how they think about onboarding, retention and monetisation, not just features.
